An aide to prominent Tanzanian opposition leader Tundu Lissu has alleged he was abducted by unidentified men, beaten inside a moving vehicle, and later escaped after gunfire erupted during a dramatic nighttime pursuit in Dar es Salaam  an incident likely to intensify scrutiny over political tensions and security concerns in the East African nation.

Mr David Djumbe, an aide to the chairman of opposition party Chama cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo, said he was seized outside his home in Mabwepande, located in the Bunju area on the outskirts of Dar es Salaam, during the night leading into Thursday, May 21, 2026.

According to Djumbe’s account, several unidentified individuals intercepted him at the gate of his residence before forcing him into a vehicle despite his attempts to resist and shout for help. He claims the men drove away at high speed as neighbours rushed outside after hearing the commotion.

Residents and bodaboda riders in the area reportedly reacted immediately, with several motorcycle riders allegedly pursuing the vehicle toward the Mbweni area in an effort to intervene.

Djumbe further claimed that while restrained inside the vehicle, he was assaulted by his captors as the chase continued through the outskirts of the city.

The incident reportedly escalated dramatically when the vehicle reached Mbweni. According to Djumbe, the suspected abductors stopped and allegedly opened fire toward the pursuing bodaboda riders, triggering panic and confusion.

He said the chaos created an opportunity for him to escape.

Still handcuffed, Djumbe claims he jumped from the vehicle and fled into nearby bushes before eventually managing to evade his alleged captors.

The allegations have not yet been independently verified, and police in Tanzania have not publicly confirmed the details of the incident. Authorities say investigations are ongoing.

The case is already attracting national attention because of Djumbe’s close association with Tundu Lissu, one of the country’s most high-profile opposition figures and a longtime critic of the government.

The reported abduction comes amid heightened political sensitivity in Tanzania, where opposition groups and human rights organizations have repeatedly expressed concern over alleged intimidation, disappearances, and attacks targeting critics and activists. Government authorities have consistently denied involvement in unlawful acts against political opponents.

For residents in Mabwepande and nearby areas, the alleged incident has fueled anxiety and fear. Witnesses reportedly described hearing shouting, speeding vehicles, and what sounded like gunfire during the late-night chaos.

Political observers say the seriousness of the allegations could increase pressure on security agencies to conduct a transparent investigation and publicly clarify what occurred.

“This is the kind of allegation that immediately raises wider concerns about political security and public trust,” said one regional political analyst monitoring developments in Tanzania.

The incident also risks drawing international attention as Tanzania continues to navigate an increasingly active political environment ahead of future national political processes.
