Gamondi Says Uganda Level With Tanzania

“We have players who know how to win important games,” Gamondi said. “Samatta and Msuva have experience at a high level, and that is a big advantage. Tanzanians should trust and believe in this team.”

Taifa Stars head coach Miguel Gamondi has brushed aside claims that Uganda hold an upper hand ahead of their Africa Cup of Nations encounter, saying the two teams are evenly matched and that the outcome will depend on what happens on the pitch rather than reputations.

Speaking to journalists as preparations continued, Gamondi described the upcoming fixture as a true regional derby, one that is expected to be intense, physical, and closely contested. He insisted there is little difference between the two sides, particularly when comparing the composition of their squads.

“Uganda are not a big team compared to us. We are on the same level,” Gamondi said. “If you look at the balance of players playing at home and those based abroad, you will see there is no major difference. This is a derby, and derbies are always tough.”

The match comes as part of the build-up to the Africa Cup of Nations, a tournament known for its unpredictability and high-intensity encounters. Games between Tanzania and Uganda have historically been tight affairs, often decided by small details rather than clear dominance by either side.

Gamondi stressed that confidence, discipline, and execution will be key, noting that pre-match labels mean very little once the game starts. According to the coach, success will depend on how well players carry out the game plan and manage pressure.

“In matches like this, quality on the day is what matters,” he said. “The team that plays better, stays focused, and takes its chances will win.”

The Argentine coach expressed belief in his squad, pointing to experienced players who have delivered in big moments before. He highlighted Mbwana Samatta and Simon Msuva as examples of leaders capable of influencing the match.

Beyond individual talent, Gamondi said teamwork and mentality will be crucial. He praised the players’ commitment in camp, saying they have shown strong focus and a clear understanding of what is at stake.

Observers say Gamondi’s comments reflect a growing sense of belief within Tanzanian football, driven by recent continental appearances and increased exposure of players to competitive leagues abroad. This confidence, they argue, is essential when facing regional rivals with similar ambitions.

Despite his confident tone, Gamondi was careful not to underestimate the opposition. He acknowledged that Uganda remain a well-organised side with discipline and experience, making them dangerous if given space or time.

“This is not a game you win by talking,” he said. “You win it by working hard, respecting your opponent, and believing in yourself.”
