East Africa's Largest Commercial Hub to Open in October

The East Africa Commercial and Logistics Centre (EACLC), the largest commercial complex in the region, is set to open in October in Dar es Salaam.

Developed by Chinese investors, the $110 million project is nearing completion, with 90% of the work finished.

The state-of-the-art complex, located in Ubungo, will house 2,060 shops and is expected to create direct employment for over 15,000 Tanzanians. Prof. Kitila Mkumbo, Minister of State in the President’s Office for Planning and Investment, has urged Tanzanians to take advantage of the opportunities the centre offers. He highlighted that 95% of the shops are reserved for local entrepreneurs.

The centre, spanning four floors with 1,000 parking spaces, will feature both Chinese and local products, fostering competition and enhancing the city’s appeal. It will also provide various services, including transportation and banking, and is anticipated to be a major trade hub for the 16 member countries of the Southern African Development Community (SADC).

The EACLC is expected to reduce the reliance on imports by offering locally sourced products, thereby decreasing US dollar expenditures and boosting Tanzania’s economic landscape.
