A 52-year-old woman from Bagamoyo, Coastal Region, has finally found relief after a successful surgery at Mwananyamala Regional Referral Hospital.
The medical team removed a 5.5-kilogram tumor from her left ovary, bringing an end to months of pain and discomfort.
The surgery was performed by a skilled team of specialists led by gynecologist Dr. Taiba Kassim Haidar, with support from Dr. Onesmo Laizer and Dr. Luponya Shelembi. Anesthetists Meshack Hinyuka and Kelvin Mapunda, along with nurses Godfrey Lukenge and Ernest Hekela, also played crucial roles in the operation.
Speaking after the procedure, Dr. Haidar confirmed the operation was a success. The removed tumor has been sent for further testing to determine its nature.
“She first came to us in August after struggling with severe pain for a long time. We monitored her condition carefully and planned for this surgery. Today, we managed to remove the tumor, and she is recovering well,” Dr. Haidar said.
For the woman’s family, the successful surgery brought immense relief. Her son, Yahya Miraji, shared his gratitude for the medical team’s hard work.
“We are so thankful to the doctors and everyone who made this possible. My mother had been in so much pain, and it was heartbreaking to see her unable to sleep or move comfortably. This operation has changed her life,” Miraji said.

The patient’s ordeal began months ago with persistent abdominal pain and discomfort. After seeking medical attention, scans revealed a massive tumor that required immediate intervention.
Dr. Haidar emphasized the importance of regular medical check-ups, especially for women, to catch such conditions early before they worsen.
“This case is a reminder of how critical it is to prioritize women’s health. Regular screenings can identify issues early and prevent prolonged suffering,” she noted.
The surgery, hailed as a significant achievement, highlights the dedication and expertise of the team at Mwananyamala Hospital. It also underscores the need for improved access to specialized healthcare services across Tanzania.
