The Dar es Salaam Regional Police, under the leadership of Commander Jumanne Murilo, has announced a comprehensive security plan to ensure public safety during the upcoming Christmas and New Year celebrations.
With the festive season approaching, authorities are taking proactive steps to prevent crime, protect vulnerable groups, and maintain law and order across the city.
Commander Muriro provided an overview of the security situation from October to December, highlighting several notable legal outcomes. Among the cases concluded successfully, Abubakar Memba, popularly known as Abbu from Mbagala, was sentenced for sexual assault. Julius Mbwambo and Paulo Elisha were convicted of rape, while Erick Muhagama was prosecuted at Ubungo Court for sexual offenses. The commander described these convictions as significant achievements for law enforcement, sending a strong message that criminal behavior, particularly violence against women and children, will not be tolerated.
As the holiday season approaches, police operations have been intensified to address both traditional and emerging security challenges. Commander Muriro emphasized that the police will work closely with places of worship to ensure safety during Christmas services and other festive gatherings. Religious leaders and communities are being engaged to act as partners in crime prevention, creating a safer environment for worshippers. Parents have also been urged to supervise their children carefully during public events and celebrations to prevent accidents and ensure their safety.
Traffic management and road safety are additional areas of focus. Dar es Salaam experiences increased vehicular movement during holidays, raising the risk of accidents. The police will increase patrols and enforce traffic laws rigorously, targeting reckless drivers and other offenders. Use of fireworks and explosives without official approval will be met with strict legal action, and the commander emphasized that public compliance with safety regulations is mandatory to avoid accidents and injuries.
Commander Murilo also addressed concerns regarding potential threats to public figures, including reports from a local priest who expressed fear for his life. The commander clarified that while police cannot provide individual protection for every person, security forces are committed to safeguarding the general public, regardless of social status or position.

The police are also monitoring intelligence about planned public demonstrations on December 25. Commander Muriro reassured citizens that law enforcement teams are prepared to maintain order while respecting the rights to peaceful assembly. Any unlawful acts will, however, be met with swift legal intervention.
Public cooperation is being highlighted as a cornerstone of the security strategy. Commander Murilo urged residents to report suspicious behavior, follow road safety guidelines, and remain vigilant within their neighborhoods. Community engagement, he explained, is key to preventing crime and ensuring that festive celebrations proceed peacefully.
The comprehensive security plan includes law enforcement coordination, proactive crime prevention, traffic monitoring, and collaboration with community and religious institutions. Officers will conduct increased patrols in high-risk areas, provide rapid response to emergencies, and educate the public on safety measures. These steps aim to ensure that Christmas and New Year celebrations in Dar es Salaam are safe, orderly, and enjoyable for all residents.
The ongoing efforts by Dar es Salaam police reflect broader strategies in law enforcement in Tanzania, showing how proactive planning, community partnership, and strong legal action contribute to public safety. Authorities hope that with citizen cooperation, the festive season will pass without significant incidents, reinforcing public confidence in security institutions and their ability to protect the community.
