Dar es Salaam’s Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system is set to extend its services, now connecting Mbagala to Morocco in Kinondoni District, marking a significant step in the city’s ongoing Phase Two expansion.
The announcement was made on August 29, 2025, by the Chief Executive of the Dar es Salaam Rapid Transit Agency (DART), Dr. Athumani Kihamia, during the handover of newly arrived buses from the port to the agency’s depot at Mbagala Rangi Tatu. A total of 52 additional buses have been delivered, bringing the fleet to 151 out of the planned 255 vehicles for this phase.
Unlike the initial routes, which connected Mbagala to Gerezani and Kivukoni, the BRT will now operate along three corridors: Mbagala–Gerezani, Mbagala–Kivukoni, and Mbagala–Morocco. The expansion is designed to provide faster, safer, and more comfortable commuting options for residents across the city.
Each bus is equipped with modern amenities, including air conditioning, Wi-Fi access, and mobile phone charging points, reflecting the city’s commitment to enhancing urban public transport and passenger experience (Bus Rapid Transit).

The system is being operated under a two-year contract by a local company, which has emphasized close collaboration with government authorities to ensure smooth clearance and deployment of buses. According to company representatives, the project not only aims to ease congestion but also to modernize the city’s public transportation network.
Phase Two follows the successful Kimara–Kivukoni line launched in 2016 and represents a broader effort to integrate more neighborhoods into the BRT network, improving accessibility, reducing travel time, and promoting sustainable urban development. The expansion also demonstrates the city’s efforts to provide reliable and efficient alternatives to informal transport options.
As the BRT system grows, future phases are expected to further expand coverage, linking additional districts and providing a seamless public transport experience for Dar es Salaam residents. City officials say the project will play a crucial role in easing traffic congestion and enhancing mobility for thousands of daily commuters (Dar es Salaam).
