China Backs Trump’s Russia Talks as Ukraine Reacts

China has voiced support for former U.S. President Donald Trump’s efforts to engage in peace talks with Russia, calling it a step toward stability.

However, the discussions have raised concerns since Ukraine was not included, sparking debate over how the war could be resolved.

China’s top diplomat, Wang Yi, praised the reported dialogue between Washington and Moscow, calling it a “positive consensus.” His remarks came after high-level meetings with Russian officials, underscoring Beijing’s stance of encouraging negotiations while maintaining its strong ties with Russia.

China has positioned itself as a neutral party in the war, urging diplomacy without directly condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Wang’s statement reflected that approach, emphasizing the need for global stability but offering no details about the potential terms of an agreement.

“The discussions between both sides show the importance of finding peaceful solutions,” Wang said, though he did not specify whether China played a role in facilitating the talks.

Trump, who has repeatedly claimed he could end the war “within 24 hours” if re-elected, has not publicly shared details about his involvement. His approach differs sharply from the Biden administration’s continued military and financial aid to Ukraine.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy responded with mixed feelings after meeting with a U.S. envoy in Kyiv. While he expressed hope that diplomatic efforts could lead to peace, he insisted that any resolution must involve Ukraine directly.

“We welcome all efforts toward a just peace,” Zelenskyy said. “But no decision about Ukraine should be made without Ukraine.”

Ukraine has repeatedly emphasized that a true peace deal must respect its sovereignty, including the return of territories currently occupied by Russia.

The Kremlin has remained vague about its discussions with Trump, but it has long insisted that any peace talks should recognize the “new realities” of the war—meaning Russia’s claim over annexed Ukrainian regions.

The news of U.S.-Russia discussions has also sparked reactions in Europe, where leaders worry that excluding Ukraine from negotiations could lead to an unfair settlement. Many Western officials stress that Ukraine must have a central role in determining its own future.
