CEOs In Limbo As Govt Axes 20 Agencies, Eyes Mergers

CEOs of 20 Public Institutions are in despair as the government has announced their dissolution and merger, a directive aimed at streamlining operatives and boosting productivity.

Presidential Appointees, including chairpersons of boards, and CEO find themselves in limbo as their positions are on the line.

The move announced on Friday, December 15 2023 by Minister for State Prof. Kitila Mkumbo stems from a comprehensive performance evaluation by Experts from Government.

The restructuring will see major consolidation across various sectors. RITA and NIDA will merge into a single entity handling all citizen identification data. Similarly, AGTIF and TADB will join forces to create a one-stop –shop for agricultural loans and funding.

In a bid to streamline the tea industry, the TEA BOARD and TSHDA will merge while the Meat and the Milk Boards will combine to promote and manage livestock products.

Technology and Manufacturing agencies and not are not spared, as CARMATEC, TEMDO and SIDO are set to unite to boost investment attraction. EPZA and TIC will also form a unified body to create a single window for investors.

Research Institutes in Agricultural sector are also witnessing consolidation. TORITA, TACRI and TRIT, will jointly be referred to as TARI.

Sadly, the Tanzania Food and Nutrition Centre together with TPFCS, KIBAHA Educational Centre, could survive as all three agencies face closure.

The dissolution of these agencies will however pave way for new entities –Kibaha Secondary School and Vocational College while Tumbi Hospital will be upgraded to a regional facility. Job losses a major concern were addressed by Mkumbo. He assured Public Servants that “no one will lose their job as reskilling and redeployments of public service positions are well planned by government.

Transparency and due process were also emphasized.” The government respect the laws establishing these institutions” he stated, Stressing that the Ministers have been tasked with the completing  all merger or dissolution within the current financial year.

This is not the end of the reform journey, Mkumbo emphasized.” Performance evaluation of public institutions is an ongoing process” reiterating government commitment to “enhancing productivity for the country’s development.”
