Tanzania’s ruling party, Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM), has nominated Energy Minister Deogratius Ndejembi as its candidate for the position of Vice President of the United Republic of Tanzania, following the resignation of Dr Emmanuel John Nchimbi.

CCM Secretary-General Dr Asha Migiro announced the decision while addressing journalists at the party’s Lumumba headquarters in Dar es Salaam on Thursday.

The nomination comes amid a dramatic political development that has seen Dr Nchimbi step down from the vice presidency and subsequently lose his CCM membership.

Dr Migiro said the party had expelled Dr Nchimbi over what she described as disciplinary misconduct. The decision was announced shortly after news emerged of his resignation from one of the country’s highest constitutional offices.

The developments mark a significant moment in Tanzania’s political landscape, with attention now turning to the constitutional process required to fill the vacancy left by Dr Nchimbi.

President Samia Suluhu Hassan accepted Dr Nchimbi’s request to resign, with the resignation set to take effect on September 4, 2026.

A statement from the State House said the necessary constitutional procedures would be followed to secure a new Vice President for the United Republic of Tanzania.

Under the constitutional process, the appointment of a new Vice President is expected to follow formal procedures involving the relevant state institutions.

CCM’s decision to put forward Ndejembi signals the ruling party’s move to quickly identify a potential successor as the country prepares for the transition.

Ndejembi currently serves as Minister of Energy and is now at the centre of growing public and political attention following his nomination for the vice presidency.

Further developments are expected as the constitutional process for the appointment and confirmation of Tanzania’s next Vice President unfolds.
