Arusha is preparing to host an interfaith prayer event on December 9, 2024, coinciding with Tanzania’s 63rd Independence Day.
The regional initiative, led by Regional Commissioner Paul Christian Makonda, aims to bring together citizens to seek divine intervention and blessings for the region’s challenges and aspirations.
Speaking during a meeting with leaders from various religious communities, Makonda highlighted the importance of collective prayer in addressing issues affecting the region. “We will walk together through key locations in Arusha, carrying flags and proclaiming blessings for peace, economic growth, and the well-being of future generations,” he said.
The day’s program will include a symbolic march across significant areas of the city, involving faith leaders, local officials, and citizens. Participants will pray for the prosperity of businesses, the safety of communities, and the empowerment of young people, reinforcing a shared commitment to unity and progress.
This prayer event aligns with President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s decision to shift Independence Day celebrations to regional levels. The president announced earlier that funds earmarked for the national celebrations would instead be directed toward critical social services to benefit local communities.

Local leaders and faith organizations have embraced the initiative, describing it as an opportunity to reflect on shared values and foster harmony. The interfaith nature of the event underscores its inclusive spirit, as it invites people of all beliefs to join hands in shaping a brighter future for Arusha.
The regional government is confident the event will strengthen the community’s resolve to tackle pressing challenges, including economic uncertainty and youth development. The day will also serve as a platform to reinforce Arusha’s role as a model for unity and resilience.
The prayer and solidarity march will stand as a symbol of the region’s commitment to fostering peace, prosperity, and togetherness.
