The President of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), Jin Liqun, has announced that the bank will provide $1.5 billion to support efforts to deliver electricity to 300 million people in Africa by 2030.
This commitment was made today, January 27, 2025, during the opening of the Africa Energy Leaders’ Summit held at the Julius Nyerere International Convention Centre (JNICC) in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
Speaking at the summit’s inauguration, Jin Liqun emphasized the critical role energy plays in driving economic and social development across Africa.
“AIIB recognizes its responsibility to support Africa in achieving sustainable energy access. This project will enhance livelihoods and reduce the challenges caused by electricity shortages,” he stated.

The summit, attended by African heads of state, energy experts, and development partners, is focused on addressing the continent’s energy challenges and finding innovative solutions.
The $1.5 billion investment from AIIB will be directed toward renewable energy generation, rural electrification, and infrastructure improvement to enhance energy distribution across the continent.
Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan, the summit’s host, commended AIIB’s initiative, highlighting its significant contribution toward achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 7, which aims for affordable and clean energy for all.
The two-day summit will feature discussions and policy proposals aimed at accelerating progress in Africa’s energy sector, with the hope of creating transformative solutions for the continent’s future.
