ACT Wazalendo Expels Member Amid Election Dispute

August 30, 2025

ACT Wazalendo, a Tanzanian political party, has officially expelled Monalisa Joseph Ndala from its membership, citing violations of the party’s constitution.

This decision follows her recent objections to the nomination of Luhaga Joelson Mpina as the party’s presidential candidate.

In a formal letter dated August 28, 2025, signed by Neema Ernest Kivamba, the Secretary of the Mafifi Branch in Kihesa Ward, Iringa, the party stated that Ndala had lost her status as an active member in accordance with the ACT Wazalendo Constitution of 2015 (2024 Edition). The letter referenced specific articles, including Articles 8(2)(a)(b), 13(1)(c)(d), and 97(b)(d), indicating her failure to meet the constitutional requirements.

Consequently, Ndala’s membership card was revoked, and her name was removed from the branch’s register.

This action comes shortly after Ndala raised concerns over the legitimacy of Mpina’s presidential nomination, arguing that his late entry into the party on August 5, 2025, violated the established guidelines. Her objections led to the Registrar of Political Parties annulling Mpina’s nomination due to constitutional and procedural discrepancies.

In response, ACT Wazalendo has filed a lawsuit in the High Court, challenging the decision by the National Electoral Commission (NEC) to exclude Mpina from the presidential candidate list. The party contends that the NEC acted beyond its legal authority by removing a candidate based on the Registrar’s directive. The High Court has granted the government five days to respond to the case, rejecting an application for a 14-day extension.

As the legal proceedings unfold, the ACT Wazalendo party remains steadfast in its position, asserting that the nomination process adhered to all constitutional and legal requirements. The outcome of this case could have significant implications for the party’s participation in the upcoming general elections.
