The government has invested approximately TZS 34.6 billion in the 28 Towns Water Supply Project in Kasulu, Kigoma Region, to improve access to clean and safe water for more than 187,000 residents.

Deputy Minister for Water, Engineer Kundo Andrea Mathew, made the announcement while inspecting the progress of the project in Kasulu, where implementation has reached 77 per cent.

Engineer Kundo said President Samia Suluhu Hassan had recognised the need to improve water services for Kasulu residents and approved funding to support the project.

“President Samia has recognised the need for clean and safe water among the people of Kasulu and approved TZS 34 billion. More than 180,000 residents are expected to benefit,” he said.

The project, valued at approximately TZS 34.6 billion, is expected to benefit 187,434 people once completed. Its implementation is part of broader government efforts to expand access to reliable water services in growing urban centres and reduce challenges associated with water shortages.

Improved water infrastructure is expected to help households access safer water while reducing the time residents spend searching for water. Reliable supplies can also support public health, sanitation, schools, healthcare facilities and local economic activities.

Access to clean water remains an important development priority because inadequate supplies can expose communities to waterborne diseases and place additional pressure on households, particularly women and children who often bear responsibility for collecting water.

The project’s completion will therefore be an important step towards improving living conditions in Kasulu. However, the benefits will depend on the timely completion of the remaining works and the effective operation and maintenance of the water infrastructure.

With implementation currently at 77 per cent, the government is expected to continue monitoring progress to ensure that the project is completed and residents receive the intended services.

The investment reflects ongoing efforts to strengthen water supply infrastructure and improve access to clean and safe water for communities across Tanzania.
