Nearly 70 patients experiencing various brain and spinal cord-related conditions have received specialist medical consultations from Dr Karanjit Singh, a renowned neurosurgeon from Medanta Hospital in Gurugram, India.
Dr Singh met the patients in Dar es Salaam, where he provided expert guidance on the appropriate treatment options for their conditions, including advice on when surgery may or may not be necessary.
He stressed that not every brain or spinal condition requires surgery, urging patients to seek proper specialist assessment before undergoing surgical procedures.
According to Dr Singh, obtaining a professional medical opinion is particularly important because some patients may undergo operations that could have been avoided if their conditions had first been properly assessed.
He said patients should be given the right diagnosis and treatment plan based on the nature and severity of their conditions, rather than automatically turning to surgery as the first option.
“Patients need to understand their condition and the available treatment options before making decisions about surgery,” Dr Singh said during his consultation visit in Dar es Salaam.
His visit comes as part of efforts to expand access to specialist medical expertise for Tanzanians suffering from complex neurological conditions, particularly those affecting the brain and spinal cord.

Dr Singh is a specialist and experienced surgeon in the treatment of neurological and spinal conditions, with his consultations focusing on helping patients understand their conditions and the most appropriate approaches to treatment.
Speaking about the visit, Dr Mustafa Dadam, a doctor from Dar es Salaam’s Tiba ya Jioni Hospital, said Dr Singh’s visit to Tanzania marks his third visit to the country this year.
Dr Dadam said the repeated visits are aimed at giving Tanzanian patients an opportunity to access specialist advice without necessarily having to travel abroad before understanding the treatment options available for their conditions.
He said the consultations are also important in helping patients make informed decisions about treatment, particularly in cases where surgery is being considered.
The initiative comes at a time when access to highly specialised medical care remains an important part of efforts to improve the management of complex neurological and spinal conditions in Tanzania.
For patients and their families, specialist consultations can provide clarity on diagnosis, treatment options and whether an operation is genuinely necessary, helping them avoid unnecessary procedures and seek appropriate care at the right time.
The latest consultations in Dar es Salaam have therefore provided an opportunity for patients with brain and spinal cord-related conditions to receive direct specialist advice and better understand the medical options available to them.
