Tanzania’s Minister of Health, Mohamed Mchengerwa, has called on member states to ensure that decisions reached during health-related meetings are effectively implemented through clear coordination mechanisms, stronger regional technical working groups and regular assessment against agreed targets.

Mchengerwa said regional health commitments should not remain on paper, stressing the need for countries to assign specific officials to coordinate implementation and strengthen professional networks that can support the execution of agreed programmes.

He made the remarks while emphasizing the importance of turning resolutions from regional health meetings into practical actions capable of improving health outcomes across member states.

In a related development, Mchengerwa announced that Tanzania has donated medical supplies worth more than TSh220 million (approximately US$88,000) to support the response to the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

He said the government would ensure that the donated medical equipment reaches areas in need quickly and safely, in line with the priorities of the DRC’s national Ebola response.

The donation reflects Tanzania’s commitment to supporting regional efforts to contain infectious disease outbreaks and strengthen cooperation in public health emergencies.

Mchengerwa stressed that effective responses to health emergencies require strong coordination, timely action and cooperation among countries and health stakeholders.

He said strengthening regional health systems and ensuring that commitments made at high-level meetings are translated into measurable action would be critical in improving preparedness and response to future health emergencies.

The minister’s remarks come as health authorities and partners continue efforts to strengthen preparedness and response measures against Ebola and other public health threats in the region.
