Tanzania and Comoros are seeking to strengthen economic cooperation by expanding trade, agriculture and livestock activities to address food supply challenges in the island nation.

Tanzania’s Ambassador to Comoros, Said Yakubu, said the two countries have significant opportunities to increase trade and investment, particularly in the supply of food, fruits and vegetables.

He made the remarks on August 17, 2026, during a meeting with businesspeople from Morogoro Region at the Regional Commissioner’s conference hall. The meeting focused on discussing opportunities and challenges facing traders from Tanzania and Comoros and identifying ways to address them.

Ambassador Yakubu said Comoros, with a population of approximately 900,000 people, relies significantly on Tanzania for food and other products, including rice, vegetables, maize flour, sweet potatoes, yams and livestock such as cattle.

He urged businesspeople from Morogoro to take advantage of the growing market in Comoros and expand their businesses across the islands.

Yakubu also called on traders to work closely with the regional government to establish effective arrangements that would facilitate smooth and sustainable trade between Tanzania and Comoros.

“Morogoro traders should take advantage of this opportunity for their own benefit and to strengthen trade between the two countries,” Ambassador Yakubu said.

Morogoro Regional Commissioner Adam Kighoma Malima said the regional government would continue supporting traders seeking to access the Comorian market.

Malima said Morogoro has strong agricultural potential, particularly in the production of fruits and vegetables, which could meet part of the demand in Comoros.

He further noted that the region has three refrigerated containers that can be used to preserve agricultural produce during transportation, helping traders export fruits and vegetables while reducing losses caused by spoilage.

Meanwhile, Tanzania Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture (TCCIA) Morogoro Regional Chairman Mwadhini Omari Myanza welcomed Ambassador Yakubu’s engagement with local traders, describing the meeting as an important step towards building productive commercial relations between Tanzania and Comoros.

He said continued dialogue between government officials and the business community would help identify practical solutions to challenges affecting cross-border trade and create new opportunities for businesses in both countries.

The discussions are expected to contribute to stronger economic ties between Tanzania and Comoros while opening additional markets for Tanzanian agricultural products and supporting food security in Comoros.
