Tanzaniaโ€™s Minister for Water, Jumaa Aweso, has stressed the importance of strengthening Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) to increase investment and accelerate the implementation of water projects across the country.

Minister Aweso made the remarks while presenting a report from the Ministry of Water to the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Water and Environment on the allocation of funds from the National Water Fund for the three-year period beginning in 2024.

He said the government is continuing to develop strategies aimed at ensuring that available resources are used efficiently while working with the private sector and other stakeholders to increase investment and improve access to water services.

Aweso said greater collaboration with the private sector would help mobilise additional resources needed to expand water infrastructure and speed up the delivery of projects, particularly in areas that continue to face water shortages.

He also emphasised the need to complete rural water projects, noting that the government is working to address water shortages in 1,575 villages that have yet to be reached by water supply infrastructure.

The minister further called for prudent use of funds from the National Water Fund, urging that resources be directed towards areas with the greatest need.

He stressed that the implementation of water projects must prioritise value for money, ensuring that allocated funds are used effectively and that planned objectives are achieved.

According to Aweso, stronger cooperation between the government, the private sector and other stakeholders remains essential to expanding investment in the water sector and ensuring that more Tanzanians have access to reliable and sustainable water services.

The governmentโ€™s emphasis on PPPs reflects its broader efforts to mobilise additional financing and expertise from the private sector while improving the efficiency and speed of infrastructure development.

Aweso said the ultimate goal is to ensure that investments in the water sector deliver tangible benefits to communities and contribute to improved living standards across the country.
