Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is facing difficulties finding a suitable candidate to serve as Kyiv’s next ambassador to the United States, with several potential candidates reportedly reluctant to take up the politically sensitive post.
According to Politico, Zelensky is looking for a senior figure with enough political influence and diplomatic experience to represent Ukraine effectively in Washington, particularly as Kyiv seeks continued US support and faces the possibility of renewed peace negotiations.
Former Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko was reportedly among Zelensky’s preferred choices for the position. However, she declined the offer, according to Ukrainian media reports. Zelensky had previously confirmed that he had offered her the ambassadorial post.
The challenge has intensified following the departure of Olha Stefanishyna, whom Zelensky dismissed as Ukraine’s ambassador to the United States on August 3. The president has yet to announce her permanent replacement.

Politico reported that other potential candidates have also shown reluctance, partly because of the demanding nature of the job and the challenges of dealing with the administration of US President Donald Trump.
Ukraine’s next ambassador is expected to play a crucial role in maintaining relations with Washington, particularly on military assistance, air defence, intelligence cooperation and diplomatic efforts surrounding the war with Russia.
Former Ukrainian officials cited in the report said the position requires a candidate with sufficient political weight to gain access to senior US officials, communicate directly on behalf of Zelensky and lobby Congress.
The vacancy comes at a sensitive moment for Ukraine, as its relationship with Washington remains central to the country’s war effort and diplomatic strategy.
One Ukrainian lawmaker, Yaroslav Yurchyshyn, suggested that Kyiv may delay the appointment until after the US midterm elections, arguing that the political landscape in Washington could become clearer after the vote.
The difficulty in filling the position highlights the importance Ukraine places on having a high-level representative in Washington at a time when decisions over weapons, intelligence, logistics and potential peace negotiations could have major consequences for the country.
