Africa has become the epicenter of a global struggle for critical minerals, with the race to secure rare earth elements increasingly shaping international alliances, trade policies and geopolitical strategy.
As the world accelerates its transition to clean energy and advanced technologies, the continent’s vast mineral wealth is emerging as one of the most valuable strategic assets of the 21st century.
The latest flashpoint is Kenya’s Mrima Hill, a mineral-rich site believed to contain significant deposits of rare earth elements, niobium and other critical minerals used in electric vehicles, artificial intelligence systems, semiconductors, renewable energy infrastructure and advanced defense technologies. The Kenyan government has shortlisted seven international consortiums—including companies backed by the United States, Australia and China—to compete for the project’s mining rights, underscoring the growing global interest in Africa’s mineral resources.
Mrima Hill is more than a mining project. It symbolizes a broader geopolitical contest unfolding across Africa, where global powers are competing to secure reliable supplies of minerals considered essential to future economic growth and national security.
According to international estimates, Africa possesses nearly 30 percent of the world’s known reserves of critical minerals, including cobalt, lithium, graphite, manganese, platinum and rare earth elements. These resources have become indispensable as governments and industries worldwide shift toward electric vehicles, battery manufacturing, renewable energy systems and artificial intelligence.

For decades, China has dominated the global critical minerals supply chain through extensive investments in African mining projects, processing plants and transport infrastructure. Chinese companies have established a significant presence in countries such as the Democratic Republic of Congo, Zambia and Zimbabwe, helping Beijing secure access to raw materials needed for its rapidly expanding manufacturing sector.
However, Western governments are now intensifying efforts to reduce dependence on Chinese-controlled supply chains. The United States, European Union and their allies have launched new investment initiatives across Africa, offering financing, infrastructure partnerships and technical support aimed at developing alternative sources of strategic minerals.
The competition reflects a growing recognition that control over critical minerals could prove as strategically important in the 21st century as oil was during the previous century.
Yet African leaders are increasingly determined not to repeat the mistakes of the past. Rather than exporting raw minerals with limited economic returns, several governments are introducing policies requiring greater local processing, value addition and domestic manufacturing before exports can take place.
Kenya’s Mrima Hill also highlights another challenge facing the continent—balancing economic development with environmental protection and cultural preservation. The mineral-rich hill is regarded by the local Digo community as a sacred ancestral site, prompting demands for stronger environmental safeguards, greater community consultation and equitable sharing of future mining revenues before commercial extraction begins.
Similar debates are unfolding across Africa as governments seek to maximize the benefits of their natural resources while protecting local communities and ensuring sustainable development.
Analysts argue that Africa now holds unprecedented leverage in the emerging global economy. The continent’s success, however, will depend not only on the quantity of minerals beneath its soil but also on its ability to negotiate stronger investment agreements, expand local refining industries and build manufacturing capacity capable of creating long-term economic value.
As competition among global powers intensifies, Africa is no longer merely a supplier of raw materials. It is rapidly becoming one of the world’s most strategically important regions, with its critical minerals expected to shape the future of global energy security, technological innovation and international diplomacy for decades to come.
