US Plans Ebola Treatment Facility in Kenya Amid Outbreak

Kenyan authorities have not yet publicly confirmed approval of the proposal, but diplomatic and health officials from both countries are understood
May 28, 2026

The United States is planning to establish a quarantine and treatment facility in Kenya for American citizens exposed to Ebola, according to international media reports, as the deadly outbreak linked to the Bundibugyo strain continues to spread across parts of Central and East Africa.

The proposed facility, which still requires formal approval from the Kenyan government, would represent a major shift in US emergency health strategy in the region. Instead of temporarily observing exposed individuals or transferring infected patients to Europe for treatment, the United States would create a dedicated centre in Kenya capable of handling quarantine, monitoring, and medical treatment locally.

Reports indicate that officers from the US Public Health Service are expected to operate the facility, with medical and emergency response staff already placed on standby for rapid deployment if the plan moves forward.

The initiative comes at a time of growing international concern over the worsening Ebola outbreak, which has intensified pressure on fragile healthcare systems across the region. Authorities say the facility is intended to improve emergency preparedness for US nationals while also strengthening the ability to rapidly contain imported infections before they spread further.

According to officials familiar with the discussions, negotiations between Washington and Nairobi are still ongoing, focusing on logistical arrangements, security measures, operational procedures, and medical protocols that would govern the facility.

Kenyan authorities have not yet publicly confirmed approval of the proposal, but diplomatic and health officials from both countries are understood to be engaged in high-level consultations regarding the potential deployment.

The Ebola outbreak, linked to the rare Bundibugyo strain, has already triggered heightened regional alerts after cases emerged in parts of Central Africa and spread concerns across neighboring countries. Health experts warn that the movement of people across porous borders and ongoing insecurity in conflict zones could complicate efforts to contain the virus.

Medical analysts say Kenya’s selection reflects the country’s relatively advanced healthcare infrastructure and strategic location as a regional transport and diplomatic hub. Nairobi hosts several international agencies and has previously played a central role in coordinating emergency responses during regional health crises.

The proposed facility would form part of broader US-backed health security initiatives aimed at improving outbreak surveillance, treatment readiness, and cross-border coordination during public health emergencies. International health organizations have increasingly emphasized the importance of rapid response systems capable of isolating and treating exposed individuals before outbreaks escalate.

The move also highlights growing international concern about the regional impact of the Ebola outbreak, especially as healthcare systems in affected countries struggle with shortages of protective equipment, limited laboratory capacity, and insecurity in some outbreak zones.

Public health experts note that establishing treatment capacity closer to outbreak regions could significantly reduce response times and improve survival outcomes while limiting risks associated with long-distance patient transport.

However, the proposal may also trigger public debate within Kenya regarding health security, national preparedness, and the potential risks of hosting a treatment centre for Ebola-exposed individuals. Authorities are expected to carefully review safety guarantees and containment measures before making a final decision.

The World Health Organization and other international partners continue to urge stronger regional coordination as countries work to prevent the outbreak from spreading further across East Africa.
