Chadema Appoints Lema to Revive Stronghold

The decision reflects Chadema’s ongoing efforts to reorganise and consolidate its political structures at a time when opposition politics in Tanzania remain under intense national attention.

Tanzania’s main opposition party Chama cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo has appointed veteran politician Godbless Lema to lead its Central Zone in a strategic move aimed at rebuilding the party’s political influence in one of the country’s most important regions.

The announcement was made during a political gathering at Mtekelezo grounds in Dodoma on Sunday, May 24, 2026, where party leaders described the appointment as part of a broader effort to revitalise Chadema structures ahead of a critical political period.

According to party officials, Lema has been assigned a special responsibility to strengthen Chadema’s organisational presence in the Central Zone, which includes the regions of Dodoma, Singida, and Morogoro.

Addressing supporters at the event, Chadema’s Unguja Zone chairperson Hashim Juma described Lema as a political heavyweight with the experience and influence needed to restore momentum in the area after years of internal instability.

“Lema has the political energy and mobilisation capacity required to rebuild the party in the Central Zone,” Juma told supporters, adding that the appointment had received approval from the party’s Central Committee.

The decision reflects Chadema’s ongoing efforts to reorganise and consolidate its political structures at a time when opposition politics in Tanzania remain under intense national attention.

The Central Zone leadership position has experienced repeated instability in recent years following the resignation of former holder Lazaro Nyalandu, who later returned to the ruling party Chama Cha Mapinduzi.

After Nyalandu’s departure, the role was temporarily held by former vice chairperson Asha Luja, who has since been residing in the United States, leaving a leadership gap that party officials say weakened coordination in the zone.

Lema’s return to a major leadership role is likely to attract significant attention given his long-standing profile as one of Chadema’s most outspoken and charismatic figures. Known for his fiery speeches and strong grassroots appeal, he previously served as Member of Parliament for Arusha Urban and became one of the opposition’s most recognisable political voices.

Political analysts say the appointment signals Chadema’s intention to strengthen mobilisation efforts in central Tanzania, particularly in Dodoma, which serves as the country’s political capital and a key battleground for national influence.

Supporters at the Dodoma rally welcomed the move enthusiastically, expressing hope that Lema’s leadership could revive party morale and reconnect with grassroots supporters across the zone.

As Tanzania’s political landscape grows increasingly active, Chadema appears to be repositioning some of its most experienced figures in preparation for future political contests and organisational restructuring efforts nationwide.
