Police in Tanzania have arrested four suspects in connection with the killing of a student from the Institute of Finance Management following the discovery of his body in a river in Dar es Salaam under disturbing circumstances.
Authorities from the Dar es Salaam Special Police Zone confirmed that the suspects are being questioned over the death of James Rogers Temba, whose body was recovered on April 30, 2026, floating in the waters of the Msimbazi River in the Kipawa area of Ilala District.
According to police statements, the victim’s body was found without a head, a detail that has intensified public shock and concern surrounding the case. Investigators say the circumstances indicate a violent killing, though officials have not yet disclosed a possible motive.
Police confirmed that investigations remain ongoing and that forensic experts are currently analysing several pieces of evidence collected from the scene and other locations linked to the inquiry. Authorities say the analysis is expected to help establish the sequence of events leading to the student’s death and determine whether additional suspects may have been involved.
The case has drawn widespread attention on social media and among students in Dar es Salaam, with many calling for swift justice and stronger security measures for young people living and studying in urban areas.

Violent crimes involving young people often generate significant national concern in Tanzania, particularly when incidents involve extreme brutality. Analysts note that such cases frequently trigger broader debates around urban safety, youth protection, and law enforcement capacity in rapidly growing cities like Dar es Salaam.
The Institute of Finance Management, one of Tanzania’s major higher learning institutions, has not yet publicly commented in detail on the incident, though students and members of the academic community have expressed grief and concern over the killing.
Police say further updates will be released once forensic examinations and interrogations are completed. The four suspects remain in custody as investigations continue.
