President Samia Suluhu Hassan has cautioned that Tanzania’s long-standing national unity is gradually weakening, calling on young people to take a leading role in restoring and preserving the country’s spirit of togetherness.
Speaking during the UVCCM conference held in Tunguu, Zanzibar, to mark 62 years of the Union, the President emphasized that although Tanzania remains peaceful, stable, and strong, subtle signs of declining unity are beginning to emerge.
She noted that the country has built a reputation over decades as a symbol of harmony and coexistence, but warned that this foundation should not be taken for granted.
“Even though our nation continues to enjoy peace and stability, we must recognize that the sense of unity we once had is slowly fading,” she said. “It is our collective responsibility—especially for the youth—to ensure that this important value is protected and strengthened.”

President Samia highlighted the critical role of young people in shaping the country’s future, urging them to resist divisions and instead promote national values that foster solidarity among Tanzanians. She stressed that unity has been a cornerstone of the nation’s development and a key factor in maintaining peace since independence.
Her remarks come at a time when rapid technological change, increased access to social media, and shifting social dynamics are influencing how young people engage with national identity and public discourse.
The Head of State encouraged youth to use their energy and platforms constructively, promoting messages that bring people together rather than those that create division.
The event, organized by the youth wing of the ruling party, brought together young leaders and members from across the country to commemorate the anniversary of the Union between Tanganyika and Zanzibar—a historic milestone that laid the foundation for modern-day Tanzania.
President Samia concluded by reaffirming the government’s commitment to safeguarding unity and called for continued cooperation across all sectors of society to ensure that Tanzania remains a cohesive and peaceful nation for generations to come.
