Egypt Russia Accelerate El Dabaa Nuclear Power Project

Egypt and Russia have stepped up the implementation of the multi-billion-dollar El Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant, a landmark energy initiative aimed at strengthening electricity generation capacity and reducing reliance on fossil fuels.

The project, valued at approximately $30 billion, represents one of the most ambitious energy developments on the African continent. It involves the construction of four advanced nuclear reactors of the VVER type, each with a generating capacity of 1.2 gigawatts. Once fully operational, the plant is expected to contribute more than 10 percent of Egypt’s total electricity demand, marking a significant shift in the country’s energy strategy.

Officials from both Cairo and Moscow say construction timelines are being accelerated to streamline various phases of development. The move is intended to improve coordination among engineers and technical experts while ensuring strict adherence to international nuclear safety standards and environmental protection measures. The collaboration reflects a deepening strategic partnership between the two nations in the field of energy and infrastructure.

The El Dabaa project is widely viewed as a cornerstone of Egypt’s long-term plan to diversify its energy mix. For decades, the country has relied heavily on oil and natural gas to meet its growing power needs.
