A California jury has found Meta and YouTube liable on all counts in a landmark case accusing the companies of designing platforms that contributed to a young woman’s addiction and mental health harm.
The jury concluded that both companies were negligent in the design of their platforms, finding that they were aware of potential dangers yet failed to adequately warn users. According to the verdict, these design choices directly caused substantial harm to the plaintiff.
The case, heard in Los Angeles Superior Court, is widely viewed as a significant legal milestone that could influence hundreds of similar lawsuits seeking to hold social media companies accountable for harmful design practices. Legal analysts say the ruling may also accelerate calls for stricter regulation of digital platforms, particularly those used by minors.
The lawsuit was filed by a now 20-year-old California woman, Kaley, and her mother. They alleged that major tech platforms—including Meta, YouTube, Snap, and TikTok—intentionally designed their systems to maximize user engagement, effectively “hooking” her at a young age. According to the complaint, prolonged exposure contributed to severe mental health challenges, including anxiety, body dysmorphia, and suicidal thoughts.
While Snap Inc. and TikTok were originally named in the lawsuit, both companies reached settlements prior to the trial and were not part of the final jury decision.

The verdict followed a seven-week trial and more than eight days of jury deliberations. Jurors ultimately awarded $3 million in compensatory damages, with the possibility of additional punitive damages still under consideration. Responsibility for the harm was apportioned between the two companies, with Meta found to bear 70 percent and YouTube 30 percent.
“This case represents a turning point,” said a legal expert familiar with digital liability litigation. “For the first time, a jury has clearly determined that platform design—how these systems are engineered to capture attention—can constitute negligence when it leads to measurable harm.”
The ruling underscores growing scrutiny of social media algorithms and engagement-driven features, particularly their impact on younger users. Critics argue that such systems prioritize user retention over well-being, often amplifying content that may negatively affect mental health.
