According to the minister, licences issued before the fasting season are temporarily suspended while Ramadan is being observed.

Authorities in Zanzibar have reinforced a long-standing restriction on the sale of alcohol during the holy month of Ramadan, warning that the ban applies to all traders, including those who had previously obtained official licences to sell alcoholic beverages.

The directive was announced by Idrissa Kitwana Mustafa, Minister of State in the President’s Office responsible for Regional Administration, Local Government and Special Departments. According to the minister, licences issued before the fasting season are temporarily suspended while Ramadan is being observed.

Speaking about the decision, Mustafa said the government had taken the step to ensure that the holy month is respected across the islands and that community traditions are preserved during a period that holds deep spiritual importance for Muslims.

Ramadan is regarded as one of the most sacred times in the Islamic calendar, when believers observe fasting from dawn to sunset while dedicating time to prayer, reflection and charitable acts. In regions with strong Islamic traditions, public activities are often adjusted during the fasting period to reflect the spiritual nature of the month.

Zanzibar, which forms part of the United Republic of Tanzania but maintains its own government structure, has a population that is largely Muslim. As a result, authorities frequently introduce guidelines during Ramadan intended to maintain what officials describe as an atmosphere of respect for those observing the fast.

The minister stressed that the restriction on alcohol sales is not new but forms part of regulations that are periodically enforced to uphold public order during the religious season.

He warned that traders who continue selling alcohol despite the directive would be considered in violation of the law and could face legal consequences.

According to government officials, enforcement efforts are already underway. The Zanzibar Liquor Control Board has launched a special operation aimed at identifying businesses that might attempt to sell alcohol during the fasting period.

Inspection teams are expected to visit bars, restaurants, retail shops and other establishments that normally sell alcoholic drinks to ensure that the directive is being followed.

Authorities say the inspections are intended not only to enforce the regulation but also to remind business owners of their responsibilities during Ramadan.

Community leaders and religious scholars across Zanzibar have welcomed the move, saying it reflects the cultural and religious values of the islands. Many argue that maintaining certain restrictions during Ramadan helps preserve the spirit of the holy month and encourages a peaceful environment for worship and reflection.

At the same time, some business operators have adjusted their services during the period by focusing on non-alcoholic beverages, food services and family-friendly gatherings that take place after sunset.

Government officials have emphasized that the measure is temporary and will remain in effect only until the end of Ramadan, when Muslims celebrate the festival of Eid marking the conclusion of the fasting period.

Once the holy month ends, normal licensing rules for alcohol sales are expected to resume in accordance with existing regulations..
