The United States says it has sunk an Iranian naval vessel during a military operation in international waters, a move that could further heighten tensions in an already fragile security environment in the Middle East.
U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth confirmed that American forces used a torpedo to strike and sink what he described as an Iranian warship operating at sea. According to Hegseth, the vessel appeared to be navigating international waters under the assumption that it was out of immediate danger before it was targeted by U.S. naval forces.
Speaking during a media briefing, Hegseth said the operation was carried out as part of ongoing efforts to protect American military assets and maintain maritime security in the region. While he did not disclose the precise location of the encounter, officials indicated that the strike took place in waters frequently monitored by the United States Navy due to rising tensions involving regional powers.
Defense officials explained that a torpedo — a self-propelled underwater weapon commonly used in naval warfare — was deployed against the vessel.
