Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner Albert Chalamila has announced that the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, will officially launch the Kariakoo Main Market on February 8, 2026.
Speaking to journalists on Friday, February 6, 2026, Chalamila urged residents of Dar es Salaam to turn out in large numbers to attend the launch ceremony, describing it as an important event for both the city’s economy and the nation at large.

He also directed traders who had blocked access roads leading into the market to clear them immediately to allow smooth preparations for the launch and to ensure that market operations continue in an orderly manner.
Chalamila recalled that the Kariakoo Market was hit by a major fire disaster in 2023. Following the incident, President Samia, through the President’s Office – Regional Administration and Local Government (TAMISEMI), issued prompt directives for the market to be rebuilt and further upgraded.
He said the government under President Samia’s leadership allocated more than 28 billion Tanzanian shillings to renovate the old market and construct a new modern facility, aimed at restoring and strengthening commercial activities in Kariakoo
