Residents of Otomaber village in Irumu Territory, eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, are struggling to recover after a brutal attack by armed militants linked to the Islamic State.
The raid, which occurred in the early hours of the morning, left dozens dead and many more injured, sowing fear and panic across the community.
Eyewitnesses described a sudden onslaught in which attackers stormed homes, set fires, and opened fire on residents indiscriminately. Many villagers fled into the surrounding forest to escape, leaving behind family members, livestock, and possessions. In the aftermath, the surviving population has been combing through the rubble and burnt homes in a desperate search for missing relatives.
Local officials confirmed the assault and are coordinating with humanitarian agencies to respond to immediate needs, including medical care for the injured and assistance for displaced families. “We are still trying to locate everyone who was affected. Families are anxious and desperate for news of their loved ones,” a regional authority said.
Eastern DRC has long been a hotspot for violence, where armed groups exploit ongoing instability to control territory and resources. Analysts say that the presence of extremist factions affiliated with the Islamic State complicates security efforts, making it difficult for local authorities and peacekeeping forces to maintain order.
