Tanzania’s Deputy Chairman of CHADEMA, John Heche, has paid tribute to the late Edwin Mtei, describing him as a paragon of ethical leadership whose principles and unwavering commitment continue to guide the party and the nation.

Speaking during the party’s condolence session at Mtei’s funeral in Tengeru, Arusha, Heche emphasized the profound impact Mtei had on shaping Tanzania’s political landscape. “CHADEMA has lost not just a founding member but a leader whose integrity and courage set the standard for principled governance,” Heche said.

Heche also conveyed condolences on behalf of CHADEMA Chairman Tundu Lissu, who is currently in detention facing cases widely regarded by observers as politically motivated. “Even in times of adversity, leaders like Mtei show us that true service requires standing firm on your convictions,” Heche remarked.

Reflecting on Mtei’s career, Heche highlighted the late leader’s bold decision to resign from his post as Minister of Finance following disagreements with the sitting president. “It is rare for leaders to relinquish power for the sake of principle. Mtei believed leadership was about service, not authority,” Heche noted, underscoring the moral courage that defined his political journey.

Heche credited Mtei with building a foundation for ethical, accountable leadership in Tanzania, and acknowledged the insights shared by former political ally Zitto Kabwe and religious leaders, who highlighted Mtei’s unwavering dedication to justice and integrity. “His legacy reminds us that principled decisions, even when difficult, leave a lasting impact on both the party and the country,” Heche added.

In addition, Heche reflected on the challenges facing current political discourse, noting that dissenting voices are often marginalized. “Today, presenting alternative views can sometimes be risky, yet Mtei remained steadfast in his principles. He understood that leadership means serving the people, not succumbing to expediency,” he said.

The funeral drew political leaders, party members, civil society figures, and citizens from across the country, all recognizing Mtei’s critical role in shaping multiparty democracy in Tanzania. Observers highlighted his influence in fostering a political culture rooted in accountability, transparency, and ethical governance.

Heche concluded by urging current and future leaders to reflect on Mtei’s example. “Edwin Mtei’s life teaches us that integrity, truthfulness, and commitment to public service are the pillars of effective leadership. We must honor his legacy by continuing to build a political system that values these principles,” he said.
