A 40-year-old man from Arumeru District in northern Tanzania is appealing for financial help after surviving a horrific attack in which his wife allegedly severed his genitals.
The man, currently receiving treatment at Selian Hospital in Arusha, faces mounting medical bills estimated at more than Tsh 1.5 million.
Baraka Melami, a resident of Olevolosi Village in Kimnyaki Ward, described the ordeal and its lasting impact on his health. Speaking on November 26, 2025, he said, “I am asking my fellow Tanzanians to help me get treatment and a device that will allow me to urinate. I am suffering a lot. My condition is serious, and the medical bills have already exceeded Tsh 1.5 million.”
The attack reportedly occurred in the early hours of November 19 while Melami was asleep beside his wife. He recounted that she began by touching him and, when he became aroused, allegedly used a knife to inflict the injury. He said she then tried to strangle him, but he managed to fight back, escape the house, and call for help. Neighbours rushed him to the hospital, where doctors informed the family that the severed tissues could not be reattached.
The victim’s wife, 30, has reportedly been taken into custody as authorities investigate the case. Melami has expressed a surprising measure of forgiveness but emphasized that they cannot continue living together.

This shocking incident has drawn attention from local leaders and residents, highlighting the severe consequences of domestic violence. A sub-village chairperson described the attack as unprecedented in the community, and the district commissioner confirmed that the matter is under police investigation. Observers note that extreme cases of spousal violence like this, though rare, underline persistent social and mental health challenges in many communities.
Medical experts say recovery from such trauma is complex and requires both physical and psychological support. Melami’s appeal for a medical device to aid urination also underscores the need for specialized healthcare interventions in similar cases.
The story has sparked nationwide concern and calls for stronger measures to protect individuals from intimate partner violence. It also emphasizes the importance of community vigilance and support networks for victims of severe abuse. Melami continues to urge Tanzanians and charitable organizations to come forward to help cover his medical costs and assist him in rebuilding his life.
