President Samia Suluhu Hassan of Tanzania on Thursday received a special message from Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The message was delivered at the State House in Chamwino, Dodoma by Russian envoy Sergei Kiriyenko on November 6, 2025.

The closed-door meeting, which lasted for about an hour, focused on strengthening the long-standing ties between the two nations. President Samia expressed appreciation for Russia’s continued friendship, particularly in sectors that have supported Tanzania’s economic and technological development.

According to sources close to the meeting, the two sides discussed potential cooperation in education, energy, health, and investment—areas viewed as key to advancing Tanzania’s Vision 2050 goals. Dr Samia emphasized that her government values partnerships built on mutual respect and shared progress rather than dependency.

Mr Kiriyenko, a senior official from Moscow, conveyed President Putin’s greetings and reiterated Russia’s commitment to expanding its presence in Africa. He noted that Tanzania remains one of Russia’s most reliable partners in the region, given its political stability and strategic role in the East African Community.

While the content of the message was not made public, diplomatic observers believe the visit signals a broader intention by Russia to strengthen its relationships across Africa, especially as global power dynamics continue to shift.

President Putin, through his envoy, reportedly praised Dr Samia for her leadership and reforms aimed at improving Tanzania’s economy and governance. He also reaffirmed his country’s support for Tanzania in areas such as defense cooperation, trade, and education exchange programs.

The two nations have enjoyed cordial relations since the early years of Tanzania’s independence under Mwalimu Julius Nyerere, and today’s engagement is seen as a continuation of that historic friendship. Both leaders are expected to direct their foreign ministries to draft new frameworks that will enhance trade, technology transfer, and cultural exchange.
