Nzega Traders Demand Urgent Market Infrastructure Improvements

Many believe that a well-organized and hygienic market would not only improve sales but also attract more customers from across the region.

Traders at the Kachoma Farmers’ Market in Nzega District, Tabora Region, have urged the government and local authorities to urgently upgrade the market’s infrastructure to ensure safer and more efficient business operations.

Currently, vendors are forced to display their produce directly on the ground, a practice that exposes goods to dust, dirt, and potential contamination. This has raised serious concerns over hygiene and the safety of agricultural products for consumers.

The traders also highlighted the lack of lighting at the market, which limits commercial activity to daylight hours. Many vendors, especially those selling vegetables and other perishable goods, struggle to operate effectively after sunset. They argue that proper lighting would enable businesses to continue safely during evening hours, ultimately benefiting both vendors and customers.

James Michael Ntonto, the market chairman, described the market’s condition as “unsatisfactory,” noting that despite several promises of improvements over the years, tangible changes have yet to materialize. “The authorities are aware of the situation, but we are still waiting for action,” he said.

Other vendors shared similar concerns. Angelina Saimon, who sells vegetables, expressed frustration at having to place her products on the ground, emphasizing that unsanitary conditions compromise both the quality of goods and the confidence of buyers.

Mwanne Twaha added that improved infrastructure, including raised display tables and designated stalls, would enhance business operations and provide a more professional environment for both traders and customers. Meanwhile, Lameck Abraham stressed that the current conditions negatively affect income, making it difficult for families who rely on market sales for their livelihood.

The collective appeal from traders underscores the importance of market infrastructure in promoting economic growth and social development at the local level. Many believe that a well-organized and hygienic market would not only improve sales but also attract more customers from across the region.

traders hope that authorities will prioritize upgrading the market to meet modern standards, ensuring it remains a vibrant hub for trade and a cornerstone of the local economy.

The Tabora Region is one of Tanzania’s major agricultural areas, and markets like Kachoma play a crucial role in linking farmers to consumers. Proper infrastructure in these markets is essential for boosting trade efficiency and sustaining livelihoods.
