South Korea Struggles With Deadly Floods and Landslides

The government has deployed significant resources, including search and rescue teams and disaster relief units, to support affected areas.
July 21, 2025

South Korea is facing a severe natural disaster as floods and landslides triggered by days of persistent heavy rain have claimed at least 14 lives.

Authorities warn that the death toll may rise, as 12 people remain unaccounted for and rescue operations continue.

The relentless rainfall caused rivers and streams to overflow, resulting in widespread flooding that damaged homes, roads, and critical infrastructure in numerous regions. Emergency responders, including military personnel, are working tirelessly under challenging conditions to reach those trapped or displaced by the disaster.

Local governments have issued mandatory evacuation orders for vulnerable communities, urging residents to move to safer areas. Temporary emergency shelters have been set up to provide relief to families forced from their homes by the rising waters.

Flooding and landslides are common hazards during South Korea’s rainy season, but this event stands out for its severity. The country’s steep mountainous terrain exacerbates the risk of slope failure, making landslides particularly dangerous.

The heavy rains have also led to significant soil erosion, which contributes to the instability of hillsides.

The government has deployed significant resources, including search and rescue teams and disaster relief units, to support affected areas. Efforts are also underway to restore essential services such as electricity, clean water supply, and transportation networks disrupted by the floods.

Climate scientists warn that extreme weather events like this are becoming more frequent and intense worldwide due to climate change. These changes pose growing challenges for disaster preparedness and response in many vulnerable regions.
