Over 2,900 Journalists Digitally Accredited Across Nation

“This system doesn’t just modernize the process—it also enhances access, equity, and accountability in the media landscape,” said Prof. Kabudi.
July 10, 2025

More than 2,900 Tanzanian journalists have now been officially accredited through a new digital registration system launched by the Journalists’ Accreditation Board (JAB), a milestone expected to significantly improve how the media industry is regulated and supported in the lead-up to the 2025 General Election.

The announcement was made during a major stakeholders’ forum on the role of the media, held in Dar es Salaam on July 9, 2025. The system was officially launched by Deputy Prime Minister and Energy Minister Dr. Doto Biteko.

The new digital platform is hosted on the Tanzania Information Agency (TAI-Habari) system, which now allows journalists to apply, renew, and track their accreditation status online without needing to physically visit government offices.

Professor Palamagamba Kabudi, Minister for Information, Culture, Arts and Sports, emphasized how this transition supports press freedom, improves transparency, and ensures wider access for journalists across all parts of the country.

“This system doesn’t just modernize the process—it also enhances access, equity, and accountability in the media landscape,” said Prof. Kabudi.

The move to digital accreditation is particularly significant for journalists based in rural or underserved areas, where bureaucratic procedures and travel costs often limited access to official credentials. With this system, any eligible media professional with an internet connection can complete the process remotely.

  • Efficiency: Automated registration and response mechanisms reduce processing time.
  • Inclusivity: Journalists in remote regions now enjoy equal access to national accreditation.
  • Data security: Digital records are tamper-proof and help prevent impersonation or forgery.

As Tanzania heads into a major election cycle in October 2025, ensuring that only ethically accredited journalists report from campaign grounds and polling stations has become a key national concern.

Dr. Doto Biteko, during his address, called on journalists to uphold integrity in election reporting, and for media houses to facilitate their reporters’ access to the platform.

“The media is our mirror and our conscience. This tool ensures the reflection is both accurate and fair,” he said.

The National Electoral Commission (NEC) and Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) were also present and committed to collaborating with JAB and media stakeholders to provide smooth access to press zones and election-related information.

Through the new system, reporters will have:

  • Access to official campaign briefings and election-day passes
  • Verified credentials that can be scanned or checked digitally
  • Easier dispute resolution in case of denial or restriction

The system is still being improved. Upcoming features include:

This digital leap reflects Tanzania’s broader push for e-governance reforms and responsible digital inclusion as envisioned in the 2025 Development Vision.
