President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Samia Suluhu Hassan, is expected to depart the country today for a two-day working visit to Maputo, the capital city of the Republic of Mozambique.
During her visit, President Samia will be the guest of honour at the 50th Independence Anniversary celebrations of Mozambique, following an official invitation from the country’s President, Daniel Francisco Chapo. The celebrations will take place at Machava Stadium, a historic venue in Maputo that has often hosted national events.
Tanzania is widely remembered and respected in Mozambique for its pivotal role in the country’s liberation struggle, during which it hosted and supported freedom fighters from the FRELIMO movement during their resistance against Portuguese colonial rule.
The anniversary marks Mozambique’s independence from Portugal, which was achieved on June 25, 1975, following years of armed resistance led by FRELIMO and supported diplomatically and militarily by regional allies, particularly Tanzania under the leadership of Julius Nyerere.
As part of her itinerary, President Samia will visit the Mozambican Heroes’ Square (Praça dos Heróis Moçambicanos), where she will lay a wreath to honour the fallen heroes of Mozambique’s liberation struggle.
Beyond the symbolic gestures, the visit is expected to reinforce long-standing diplomatic, security, and economic cooperation between the two nations. Tanzania and Mozambique share not only historical and cultural ties but also a strategic partnership in sectors such as energy, infrastructure, and border security—especially in the face of regional threats including terrorism and maritime crime.
The visit comes at a time when both nations are investing in regional integration and sustainable development through platforms such as the Southern African Development Community (SADC).
