Uganda has officially launched the construction of its new embassy in Dodoma, becoming the first country to begin building a permanent diplomatic mission in Tanzania’s growing capital.
The groundbreaking ceremony took place in Mtumba, the government district of Dodoma where key ministries and offices are being centralized.
Uganda’s Ambassador to Tanzania, Colonel Fred Mwesigye, described the project as a milestone not only in infrastructure, but also in diplomacy. “This embassy will serve as a bridge, deepening the longstanding diplomatic and economic ties between our two nations,” he said. “Tanzania and Uganda are more than neighbors—we are brothers.”
He emphasized that Uganda’s decision to be the first to start construction in Dodoma reflects appreciation for Tanzania’s continued support over the years, including its pivotal role in Uganda’s liberation struggle.
Colonel Mwesigye also urged other diplomatic missions to follow Uganda’s lead, noting the Tanzanian government’s efforts to provide an enabling environment for foreign embassies.
Representing the Tanzanian government at the event, Hon. Dennis Londo, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, applauded Uganda’s initiative and called it a “historic step” that reflects the strong and growing bond between the two countries.
“This is not just a diplomatic gesture—it’s a reaffirmation of our enduring partnership built on mutual respect, shared history, and a vision for regional integration,” Londo said.
He pointed to several recent developments that make Dodoma an attractive location for international missions. These include the construction of Msalato International Airport, which is nearing completion, and major investments in education, healthcare, and urban infrastructure.
Dodoma’s Regional Commissioner, Hon. Rosemary Senyamule, reaffirmed the city’s readiness to host diplomatic missions. She highlighted efforts to improve access to essential services such as clean water, transportation, and medical facilities.

The event drew senior officials from both governments, including Hon. Ummy Nderiananga, Deputy Minister in the Tanzanian Prime Minister’s Office; Uganda’s Head of Protocol, Ambassador Charles Ssentongo, and Ms. Chiku Kiguhe, Director of Administration and Human Resources at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation.
This development is part of Uganda’s broader strategy to expand its diplomatic footprint worldwide. In recent years, the Ugandan government has prioritized building or upgrading its foreign missions to better serve its diaspora and promote bilateral partnerships.
The new embassy in Dodoma is expected to strengthen diplomatic presence, streamline consular services, and foster greater collaboration within the East African Community, of which both countries are founding members.
With the foundation now laid, Uganda’s move is likely to spark momentum among other nations to establish or relocate their diplomatic offices to Dodoma—cementing the city’s status as a rising center for international diplomacy in East Africa.
