The Government of Tanzania, through the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA), has taken a bold step to protect children by shutting down more than 80,000 digital platforms—including websites, blogs, forums, and social media accounts—that were found to be circulating content deemed harmful to public morality and mental health, especially that of minors.

The announcement was made on Monday, May 5, 2025, in Parliament in Dodoma by Deputy Minister for Information, Culture, Arts and Sports, Hamis Mwijuma, while responding to a question from Special Seats Member of Parliament, Ng’wasi Kamani.

“These platforms were promoting content that not only violated our national moral code but also posed serious risks to the mental health of our children,” Mwijuma told lawmakers. He added that protecting the well-being of young internet users remains a key priority for the government.

According to Mwijuma, the TCRA has intensified surveillance in collaboration with local Internet service providers and global tech companies to identify and take action against platforms that publish or host inappropriate material.

The Deputy Minister called on parents, teachers, and guardians to stay vigilant and take part in educating children about safe and responsible internet usage. “Digital safety begins at home. Our joint responsibility is to ensure that the internet remains a tool for learning and growth, not a source of harm,” he said.

This move reflects Tanzania’s broader commitment to upholding national values and fostering a safer digital environment for all its citizens.
