Dmitry Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of Russia’s Security Council, has warned that no one can guarantee Kyiv’s safety if Ukraine launches attacks on Moscow during the upcoming May 9 celebrations commemorating the Soviet victory in World War II.

The warning follows an announcement earlier this week by Russian President Vladimir Putin, who declared a 72-hour pause in military operations against Ukraine to allow peaceful observance of the Victory Day events. The Kremlin described Putin’s declaration as a gesture to test Ukraine’s willingness to engage in efforts to restore peace.

However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky responded by rejecting the 72-hour proposal, stating that he would only consider such a truce if Russia agreed to a 30-day ceasefire instead.

Zelensky further stated that Moscow would be held responsible for ensuring the safety of international leaders expected to attend the May 9 events.

Chinese President Xi Jinping is among at least 20 world leaders expected to join the celebrations in Moscow next week.

The exchange underscores the fragile state of diplomatic engagements between the two countries, even as symbolic moments like Victory Day provide opportunities for de-escalation.
