A devastating bus accident in Oromia, Ethiopia, has claimed the lives of at least 26 people. The incident occurred while the bus was traveling from Shambu, in the western part of the country, to Addis Ababa, the capital city.
According to local authorities, in addition to those who died, 43 others were injured in the crash. Sadly, the number of fatalities could rise as rescuers continue their work at the scene. The exact cause of the accident remains unclear, with details still emerging.
A government official from East Wollega in Oromia confirmed the tragic loss and said that investigations are underway. This accident is part of a worrying trend in Ethiopia, where road safety is often compromised by poor vehicle maintenance and a lack of strict enforcement of driving laws. Overloaded vehicles and unqualified drivers are common factors in many accidents across the country.
This crash follows a similar tragedy in December 2024 in the Sidama region, where a truck carrying passengers overturned, killing at least 71 people. These repeated incidents have raised serious concerns about the state of road safety in Ethiopia, where better regulation and improved infrastructure are urgently needed to prevent further loss of life.
