Residents of Mtakuja Ward in Geita Municipality, located in Geita Region, have called on the Minister for Works to take immediate action against a contractor responsible for ongoing road construction in their area.

The community has expressed frustration over what they describe as a series of missteps that have led to constant flooding, particularly around schools and residential areas, making daily life increasingly difficult.

The key concern is that the contractor has directed large water drainage systems into areas that were not meant to handle such volumes of water. This has resulted in significant flooding every time there is heavy rain, leaving streets submerged, damaging property, and making it unsafe for students and residents alike.

In addition to the drainage issues, residents say the contractor has failed to complete the construction of essential bridges. These unfinished projects have left several areas isolated, especially during the rainy season, when flooded roads make it nearly impossible to travel or transport goods like crops to markets. The lack of these vital infrastructure components has had a direct impact on the community’s day-to-day life.

One frustrated resident shared, “Our children can’t go to school safely, and we can’t even get our produce to the market. It’s really difficult, and it feels like no one is paying attention to our needs.”

As the rains continue and the situation worsens, the residents have made an urgent appeal to the Minister for Works to step in. They are demanding an investigation into the contractor’s actions and immediate solutions to prevent the flooding from continuing.

“We need help from the government right away. This flooding is ruining our homes, and we can’t move freely anymore. It’s really frustrating, and if nothing is done soon, things will only get worse,” said another concerned resident.

Local government officials have acknowledged the problem and assured the community they are taking their concerns seriously. They’ve promised to escalate the issue to the relevant authorities and are calling for patience as they work to resolve the situation.

“We completely understand the challenges the community is facing, and we are doing everything we can to address it. We will hold the contractor accountable and ensure the necessary infrastructure is completed,” a local official said.

The heavy rains in Geita have only worsened the situation, but the residents remain hopeful that the government will take swift action to bring relief and ensure the contractor fulfills their obligations.
