The Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) recently highlighted a substantial recovery in international postal services, showing signs of resurgence after years of decline.

According to Dr. Jabiri Bakari, TCRA’s Director General, the sector report from July to September 2024 reveals a 74% rise in international items processed by Tanzania Posts Corporation (TPC) since mid-2021, with 979,625 items handled in 2023, compared to 564,528 in 2021.

This growth marks a notable recovery from the downturn in 2019-2021, when global mail volumes decreased significantly due to the COVID-19 pandemic and competition from digital alternatives. TPC’s market share of domestic postal services, currently at 39%, remains modest, but the corporation’s efforts to modernize operations and enhance service quality are paying off.

New digital initiatives like the “Posta Kiganjani” mobile app have contributed to this turnaround, enabling users to access postal services conveniently through mobile devices.

The government is also backing these efforts, committing resources to boost TPC’s infrastructure and security. Key initiatives include additional inspection equipment and collaborations with security agencies to ensure safe handling of parcels. This digital shift, part of a larger modernization strategy, aligns with Tanzania’s push for improved public service accessibility and efficiency
