Tanzania has outlined its strategic plan and readiness to develop nuclear energy as an alternative clean power source aimed at driving economic growth and improving societal welfare.
This was revealed by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy, Dr. Doto Biteko, during his address at the ongoing Second U.S.-Africa Nuclear Energy Summit held in Nairobi, Kenya. The summit brings together leaders in the energy sector, policymakers, and experts from various African nations to discuss the future of nuclear energy on the continent.
In his remarks, Dr. Biteko emphasized that Tanzania is poised to advance nuclear energy as one of the key sources that will ensure the country has a sufficient and reliable power supply. He stressed that this energy source aligns with international environmental conservation standards.
“Tanzania’s readiness to develop and utilize nuclear energy is underscored in the 2015 Energy Policy, the 2009 Mining Policy, the Master Plan for Power Sector Development, and the Renewable Energy Strategy, all of which recognize the importance of nuclear energy in meeting the country’s energy demands,” Dr. Biteko stated.

He further highlighted that under the leadership of President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, the government is taking crucial steps to facilitate the use of nuclear energy as a clean power source. Currently, Tanzania possesses approximately 58,500 tons of uranium deposits, which could serve as a viable resource for nuclear energy production.
Dr. Biteko explained that the availability of alternative energy sources like nuclear power will enable Tanzania to strengthen its trade relations with other countries both within and outside Africa. This, in turn, will enhance the nation’s economy at both the individual and national levels.
The summit continues as African leaders and experts exchange views on the role of nuclear energy in achieving sustainable development across the continent.
