The Minister of Minerals, Hon. Anthony Mavunde, has announced that the Ministry of Minerals has agreed with the Office of the President, Regional Administration, and Local Government (TAMISEMI) to meet and address the challenge of levies imposed by councils on miners in the country.
He made these remarks on August 5, 2024, in Morogoro during a meeting with miners from Morogoro Region, aimed at listening to and resolving their issues.
“I have listened carefully to this cry about council levies and other charges on small-scale miners. These problems are not only here but exist all over the country,” said Mavunde.

He added that the directives from Prime Minister Hon. Kassim Majaliwa require the two ministries to meet and address this issue.
“I want to assure you that my colleague Hon. Mohamed Mchengerwa and I have agreed that after President Dr. Samia Suluhu’s visit to Morogoro, we will hold a joint meeting to address this issue.”
Minister Mavunde also used the opportunity to assure the miners of Morogoro of President Dr. Hassan’s commitment to strengthening mineral research, including benefiting the Morogoro Region.
Hon. Mavunde praised the Morogoro Regional Mining Office for exceeding the revenue collection target, reaching 4.9 billion TZS, surpassing the set goal of 4.2 billion TZS.
Reading a statement on behalf of the miners, the Chairman of the Morogoro Region Miners Association (MOREMA), Dr. Omar Mzeru, thanked President Dr. Samia Hassan for providing drilling machines to small-scale miners. He also used the opportunity to ask the Minister of Minerals to address the major challenge of numerous levies imposed by councils and other government institutions, which have been hindering the income of small-scale miners.
