Entrepreneurs should be innovative in their product development, especially products derived from banana fibers, to generate income by creating various items.

This was highlighted by the Regional Administrative Secretary of Morogoro, Alhaji Dr. Mussa Ali Mussa, during his visit to inspect the entrepreneurial training taking place at the Vocational Education and Training Authority (VETA) college in Morogoro Municipality.

Dr. Mussa mentioned that banana fibers are a valuable source of income due to their significance in making various products, including baskets, bags, mats, fabrics, and even sanitary towels.

“What we have discovered, with my experts, is that banana plants are a wealth source through their fibers, and if we plan well, we can help increase incomes. Therefore, you need to be innovative,” said Dr. Mussa Ali Mussa.

Additionally, the Regional Administrative Secretary advised the region’s municipalities not to discard banana plants but to seize the opportunity to use them as a source of revenue and to enhance the local economy.

Furthermore, Dr. Mussa revealed that the machine used to produce these banana fiber products is available at the VETA College in Kihonda District.

For this reason, Dr. Mussa urged entrepreneurs to take out 10% loans, as each year the municipality allocates 40% for women’s groups, people with disabilities, youth, and special groups, which will help them obtain capital for their development.

On her part, the VETA training instructor, Ms. Gema Ngoo, said that many communities are used to discarding banana plants after harvesting bananas without realizing their value. Therefore, they have taken early steps to learn this knowledge, which some neighboring countries, particularly Uganda, have started to implement.

She also mentioned that the available machines were designed by skilled and innovative experts at the college and are continually being improved for ease of use while providing higher quality fibers.
