Tanzania’s Andrew Mlugu Shines in Paris 2024 Judo Debut

On Monday, July 29, 2024, Tanzania commenced its campaign in the 33rd Summer Olympics in Paris on a high note, with judoka Andrew Thomas Mlugu (-73kg) securing a victory by Ippon (Judo KO) against his opponent William Tai Tin from Samoa. Mlugu dominated the match from start to finish.

Mlugu stands out as the only African winner in this round among the four African competitors who participated today.

Speaking after the bout, Mlugu mentioned that despite his dominance and victory, he sustained a left knee injury during the match. Nevertheless, he affirmed his commitment to continue fighting in the next round.

In Judo, winning the first match means proceeding to the second round, where the victor advances to the quarterfinals.

In the upcoming bout, Mlugu will face French judoka Joan-Benjamin Gaba.

In Judo, the competition continues until the ultimate winner is determined, meaning that by this evening, the medal winners in Mlugu’s weight category will be awarded.

The Tanzanian judoka’s impressive performance has set a positive tone for the country’s participation in the Paris 2024 Olympics.
