Kisarawe District Commissioner Petro Magoti has banned motorcycles from transporting charcoal within the district effective from today, July 10, 2024. Those caught violating this ban will be fined TSh 1 million, and failure to pay the fine will result in the confiscation of the motorcycle.
Additionally, Magoti has banned vehicles carrying charcoal from operating in Kisarawe after 6 PM. Any violators will have their vehicles and charcoal seized.
Magoti issued these directives today during a meeting of the district’s harvesting committee, which included over 30 members from all villages surrounded by forests.
“In various meetings, I mentioned that starting July 1, 2024, we would begin enforcing the laws, regulations, and procedures. The President has issued directives nationwide to reduce the use of charcoal and instead use gas. Forests are a valuable resource, and we in Kisarawe are fortunate to have many forested areas.”

“I want to give these instructions: according to our country’s laws, it is prohibited for motorcycles to transport charcoal. These are LATRA laws, not my laws or the DC’s laws. I am here to enforce the law. It is forbidden for motorcycles to carry charcoal in Kisarawe District. If caught, the fine for the motorcycle is TSh 1 million, and if you fail to pay, we will confiscate the motorcycle.”
“The second directive, by law, the latest time a vehicle carrying charcoal can travel on roads within Kisarawe District is 6 PM. If you exceed this time, we will seize the vehicle, and you will have to pay a fine of TSh 1 million. If you fail to pay, we will confiscate the vehicle and the charcoal. The time given to pay the fine is limited, and if it passes, we will seize the vehicle and the charcoal.
I instruct that any vehicle violating these laws be seized, whether it belongs to a leader, a businessman, or a worker, you will have to follow the law.”
