A total of 800 students from three primary and nursery schools in Kigonigoni Ward, Mwanga District in Kilimanjaro region, are being taught by only 10 teachers.
Out of these, two are on maternity leave and one passed away last week due to suicide.
some parents, including Omary Iddy, stated that there is a severe shortage of teachers in the three primary schools in the ward.

“The existing schools are Kigonigoni, which has over 410 students and six teachers, one of whom is set to transfer to Kagera.
Kwakihindi School has about 200 students and four teachers, two of whom are on maternity leave, leaving only two available. Likewise, Kwa Ruru School has about 200 students and four teachers, one of whom (the headteacher) committed suicide last week due to family issues,” said Iddy.
Abdtway Kajiru noted that the shortage of teachers leads to poor performance among students in their exams, ultimately affecting their transition to secondary education with inadequate knowledge.
“Many children pass to join Kigonigoni Secondary School, but most of them lack proper understanding, leading to dropping out due to poor comprehension of subjects, resulting from the weak foundation of primary education they receive,” Kajiru explained.
Anastazia Msuya, another parent, emphasized the need for government intervention in the rural teacher crisis and the implementation of a special education plan, particularly for primary schools.
“Although some schools have plans to hire local teachers, there is a significant need for the government to look closely at rural areas to ensure efficiency. Here, it’s a community of farmers and herders.
When a child fails seventh grade, they are sent to herd livestock. This poses a future risk to our nation,” Msuya stated.
The District Commissioner of Mwanga, Abdallah Mwaipaya, acknowledged that the teacher shortage is a significant issue, especially in rural areas.
“In some schools, you may find only two, three, or four teachers, but I commend the parents for collaborating with school committees to hire qualified but unemployed teachers, which helps alleviate the burden.
However, the shortage remains a problem, particularly in remote areas, also contributed by infrastructure improvements and the construction of new schools,” Mwaipaya said.
Mwaipaya mentioned that currently, the requirement is for 1,027 teachers, but only 650 are available, leaving a deficit of 377 teachers, though the government continues to recruit more.
He also noted that despite these challenges, Mwanga continues to perform well in all exams from nursery to sixth form.
