In Kilosa District, Morogoro Region, 27 individuals are in police custody following unrest in the Magubike area, where they blocked the Morogoro-Dodoma highway.
The protest was sparked by the tragic death of 20-year-old Piason Senyagwa, who was fatally struck by a vehicle while crossing the road.
Kilosa District Commissioner Shaka Hamdu Shaka, speaking at Senyagwa’s funeral, reported that the ensuing chaos led to property damage and injuries to two police officers. He urged residents to refrain from taking the law into their own hands, assuring them that the government is addressing their concerns.
“We have apprehended 27 individuals, including the driver involved in the accident,” Shaka stated. “The vehicle responsible has also been seized for further legal procedures.”
Magubike Ward Councilor Abuu Msofe explained that Senyagwa’s death is part of a troubling pattern in the area. “In the past two years, nine people have been fatally hit by vehicles here,” Msofe noted. “Residents, frustrated by the recurring incidents, resorted to blocking the road to demand the installation of speed bumps.”

The protest escalated when police arrived, leading to clashes where stones were thrown at officers. Law enforcement responded with tear gas to disperse the crowd.
Msofe appealed to the government to heed the community’s plea for safety measures. “This issue has persisted for too long. We need immediate action to prevent further loss of life,” he urged.
