11-Year-Old Arrested After Attempted Poisoning of Mother

An 11-year-old boy has been taken into police custody after attempting to poison his mother by mixing a toxic substance into her food.

The disturbing event unfolded on February 11, 2025, in Msalabani Juu, a neighborhood in the Iwemba village, within the Mikumi District.

Police say the young boy, identified as John Kandole, who is a seventh-grade student at Lwemba Primary School, had grown frustrated with his mother’s constant demands and lack of time for leisure. Authorities believe that the boy’s emotions reached a boiling point due to his mother’s insistence on him completing household chores, leaving little room for playtime or relaxation.

In a tragic turn, John allegedly mixed Lara Force, a pesticide commonly used to control pests on vegetables, into a meal of rice and beans that his mother, Regina John Kalinga, had prepared. After eating the food, Regina, along with five other individuals, began experiencing severe stomach pains. They were quickly rushed to St. Kizito Hospital for treatment. While Regina remains hospitalized, the others, including Eusebia Kamili (53), Zena Salehe (17), Patrick Ndola (11), Alvin Alex (5), and Hidaya Swedi (1), were treated and released.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the boy’s actions stemmed from his deep frustration with his mother’s demands. He reportedly felt overwhelmed by the chores and responsibilities, with little time left for play and socializing.

His actions, though tragic, reflect the pressures that many children may face in homes where emotional and personal needs are overlooked.

This incident has shocked the local community, raising awareness about the importance of healthy communication between parents and children. While the situation is deeply upsetting, it serves as a reminder of the emotional struggles children sometimes experience when they feel unheard or neglected.

The police are continuing their investigation, and the community is left to reflect on the importance of fostering positive relationships and providing support for young people facing emotional challenges.
